Ruby Chinese Restaurant

1571 Sandhurst Circle

Scarborough (Finch & McCowan), Ontario

Reception: 6:00 p.m. Dinner: 7:00 p.m.

On September 30, 1979, CTV’s W5 Program aired a segment entitled “Campus Giveaway.” The program depicted university students of Chinese origin as foreigners who were taking away academic opportunities at our universities from “true” Canadians. In fact, all of the students shown were Canadians; some were born here in Canada and others had become Canadian citizens after immigrating. The Ad Hoc Committees of the Council of Chinese Canadians Against W5 was formed in response to this blatantly racist and discriminatory piece of journalism and rallies and protest actions were organized across Canada by community-based committees. Six months later, CTV issued a full apology for the program.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the start of the Anti-W5 campaign, a community awakening that led to the formation of the Chinese Canadian National Council. Our theme for this year’s banquet: “W5 + 30” honours the selfless efforts of these social activists, community members, groups and supporters.

We ask for your generous support so that CCNC can continue to champion social justice and the full participation of all members of Canadian society.
